SOME CULTURAL NOTES

SOME CULTURAL NOTES 1: There was an unusually long update to Windows 10 today with many openings and closings. I hope this email goes through. 2: I listened to Juju (her first name is spelled in different ways) Wang play Her New York Recital. She gave 4 or 5 encores to an enthusiastic audience She is a beautiful, young --something like mid-twenties – Chinese girl / woman with a beautiful figure that she likes to show off in expensive clothes that don't cover too much. Despite--or perhaps because of - that, she is the real thing musically. Her technique rivals or exceeds her competitors and she is extremely musical as well. She played the notorious Beethoven sonata Opus 106, called the Hammerklavier. It is beyond difficult, but she made it sound easy and even attractive. Among encores. she tackled the equally notorious finger twister that Vladimir Horowitz made out of Bizet's Carmen, as well as another that was its equal of Mozart's Turkish March movement by a composer arranger I missed. These went without mistakes at blazing speed, but she ended with a Chopin waltz/nocturne played with great delicacy. If you find the right website. They can be cast to YouTube. I watched "Come Blow Your Horn" based on the Neil Simon early play about a Jewish family with Frank Sinatra miscast as the older ":bum" brother who eventually marries--which Neil eventually did too, if too often. Molly.Picon(who by the way was born in Boston, i believe and had to taught the the Yiddish she later used on stage) plays his mother. The father is played by another veteran of the Jewish-American stage Lee J. Cobb (originally Jacob?) and screen. Looking up Neil Simon on the Internet I found that he is one month older than I – born in July rather than August – but that he has not had a commercial success in many years. However, he has had five wives, whatever that means. And it is said that his many successful plays and movies are derived from his early family life. It is also reported in the NY Post, I think, that he's very bitter about his lack of recent success and has recently been embroiled in disputes with Mary Tyler Moore, as well as other actresses who can't catch the now passe old Jewish overtones in his works. I guess some people are never satisfied. 4. Casting from the Internet to TV has become so mainstream that modern television sets are getting extremely complicated, even though they are reasonable in price nowadays. Having honed her performance skills on the stages of Londonâ¿¿s Old Vic and Royal Court Theatres, Plowright impressed with supporting roles in films like "Time Without Pity" (1957) and "The Entertainer" (1960), the latter film starring future husband, Olivier. Despite this early success, she spent much of the 1960s and â¿¿70s dividing her time between family duties and occasional stage work with Olivier. Eventually, Plowright made a tentative return to film in projects such as "Brimstone and Treacle" (1982) and "Drowning by Numbers" (1988), although it was in the years that followed the passing of Olivier that her own career experienced new life. Suddenly reinvigorated, the actress appeared in an astounding number of films and television programs throughout the next decade, including acclaimed turns in "Avalon" (1990), "Enchanted April" (1992), "Stalin" (HBO, 1992), "Widowâ¿¿s Peak" (1995) and "Tea With Mussolini" (1999). In 2004, she reached her late husbandâ¿¿s vaunted status in the U.K. when she was awarded the title of Dame Joan Plowright by Queen Elizabeth II. Continuing to appear in such films as "The Spiderwick Chronicles" (2008), Plowright remained as vibrant on screen as she had 50 years earlier. Born Joan Ann Plowright on Oct. 28, 1929, in Brigg, Lincolnshire, England, she was the daughter of Daisy Margaret and William Ernest Plowright, a newspaper editor. Raised in nearby Scunthorpe, she was encouraged by her mother to participate in the productions of the amateur theater group that she oversaw. Despite her fatherâ¿¿s misgivings, the young Plowright pursued her growing acting ambitions, and at the age of 15, won an amateur theater prize, which included a weekâ¿¿s run performing in a production with the Harry Hanson Players. Although being discouraged against following her dream by a curmudgeonly Mr. Hanson, she returned to her theatrical studies with a stint at the Laban Art of Movement Studio after graduating high school. After making her professional stage debut in a 1948 production of "If Four Walls Could Talk," it was off to London, when Plowright received a two-year scholarship to study at the prestigious Old Vic Theatre School. Following her London stage debut in 1954, Plowright became a member of the Royal Court Theatre in 1956, where she appeared in such productions as "The Crucible" and "The Country Wife." It was during a performance of the latter play that a certain Laurence Olivier, who was sitting in the audience with his then-wife, actress Vivien Leigh, first noticed Plowright. In interviews years later, the man many deemed the greatest actor of his generation, freely admitted that he was instantly smitten. Meanwhile, Plowright, who had previously appeared in a handful of British television productions, made her feature film debut with an uncredited turn in American director John Hustonâ¿¿s epic adaptation of Herman Melvilleâ¿¿s "Moby Dick" (1956), starring Gregory Peck as the obsessed Captain Ahab. In 1957, she took over the role of Jean, the daughter of fading music hall performer Archie Rice (Olivier) in playwright John Osborneâ¿¿s acclaimed drama "The Entertainer." By all accounts, it was during the course of the production and its subsequent run on Broadway that the actors fell in love. Steadily gaining notoriety, Plowright landed her first significant film role in Joseph Losey's taut British thriller "Time Without Pity" (1957). Later, she starred as Lady Teazle in a taped-for-television performance of Richard Sheridanâ¿¿s "The School for Scandal" (BBC, 1959), followed by the feature film adaptation of "The Entertainer" (1960), once again opposite Olivier in the title role. By then, Plowrightsâ¿¿ marriage to British actor Roger Cage had ended, as had Olivierâ¿¿s 20-year union with the mentally ill Leigh. Now free to publicly acknowledge their relationship, the couple quickly married in 1961. For her Broadway performance as the unwed mother in "A Taste of Honey" that same year, Plowright received a 1961 Tony Award for Best Actress. Surprising many, Plowright, whose professional trajectory was on a definite upswing, chose to spend the better part of the next two decades raising her growing family in order to allow her more famous husband to focus on his career. Still making time for periodic work on the stage, she was triumphant in a production of George Bernard Shaw's "St. Joan" (1963), and played Sonya in a recorded mounting of Anton Chekhovâ¿¿s "Uncle Vanya" (1963). Plowright later made her directorial debut with "Evasion of Woman" at the Old Vic Theater in 1969, prior to returning to the cineplex in a film adaptation of Chekhovâ¿¿s "Three Sisters" (1970), co-directed by Olivier, who performed in the production as well. That same year, she also appeared as Portia opposite Olivierâ¿¿s Shylock in a performance of Shakespeareâ¿¿s "The Merchant of Venice" with the National Theatre. She eventually returned to the London stage with a glowing performance in the title role of the 1977 production of "Filumena," in addition to taking on a rare film role for director Sidney Lumet in the adaptation of playwright Peter Shafferâ¿¿s psychological drama "Equus" (1977), starring Richard Burton. In 1980, Plowright reprised her role of Filumena on Broadway, which would mark the beginning of her transition from work primarily on stage, to an increased emphasis on film. Plowright began her return to film in screenwriter Dennis Potterâ¿¿s suburban gothic oddity, "Brimstone and Treacle" (1982), which starred pop star Sting as a mysterious stranger who may or may not be the devil incarnate. Seeming to enjoy working in darkly bizarre projects, she took part in writer-director Peter Greenwayâ¿¿s "Drowning By Numbers" (1988; released in the USA in 1991), cast as the murderous mother of two equally deadly sisters, all of whom share the name of Cissie Colpitts. After Olivierâ¿¿s death from cancer in 1989, Plowright â¿¿ suddenly out from under the great thespiansâ¿¿ shadow â¿¿ experienced a late-career renaissance as a character actress in film. Her cinematic second life began with a turn as a mother unsuccessfully trying to assist her daughter (Tracey Ullman) in the murder of her philandering husband (Kevin Kline) in director Lawrence Kasdanâ¿¿s dark comedy "I Love You to Death" (1990). Right on its heels came writer-director Barry Levinsonâ¿¿s third entry in his Baltimore trilogy, "Avalon" (1990), in which she played the matriarch of a Polish-Jewish immigrant family. With her Golden Globe-winning portrayal of the waspish Mrs. Fisher in director Mike Newellâ¿¿s "Enchanted April" (1992), Plowright now found herself in high demand as a character player. More as a treat for her grandchildren than to satisfy any creative need, Plowright played the saintly wife to Walter Matthau's Mr. Wilson in the big screen adaptation of the classic comic strip, "Dennis the Menace" (1993), in addition to a brief appearance in the Arnold Schwarzenegger self-referencing satire "Last Action Hero" (1993). She then offered a slight variation of the Mrs. Fisher character in the comedy-drama "Widowâ¿¿s Peak" (1994), alongside Mia Farrow and Natasha Richardson. Working at a breakneck pace, she was also seen in director Roland Joffé⿿s critically-reviled interpretation of "The Scarlet Letter" (1995), Franco Zeffirelliâ¿¿s criminally under-seen version of Charlotte Brontë⿿s "Jane Eyre" (1996), the Merchant-Ivory production of "Surviving Picasso" (1996), and as the stalwart nanny in Disneyâ¿¿s live-action remake of "101 Dalmatians" (1996), to name but a few. After a featured role in the romantic drama "Dance With Me" (1998), Plowright made her first venture into weekly television as a cast member on the sitcom "Encore! Encore!" (NBC, 1998-99). Cast as the feisty owner of a Napa Valley vineyard and the mother of a former opera star (Nathan Lane), the actress provided several of the short-lived showâ¿¿s most over-the-top moments. Barely slowing down, Plowright once again played one of her signature English upper crust characters in Zeffirelliâ¿¿s semi-autobiographical "Tea with Mussolini" (1999), alongside Cher and fellow British theater grand dames, Judi Dench and Maggie Smith. Easily moving from period drama to contemporary comedy, later projects included a turn as an eccentric billionaire in the Steve Martin-Queen Latifah pairing "Bringing Down the House" (2003). She delivered a charming performance as a retired woman who unexpectedly finds a dear friend in a young, aspiring writer (Rupert Friend) in "Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont" (2005), and playfully lent her voice to the animated family feature "Curious George" (2006), as Ms. Plushbottom. Plowright was also perfectly cast as the kindly, but misunderstood Aunt Lucinda in the big screen adaptation of the beloved childrenâ¿¿s fantasy book series "The Spiderwick Chronicles" (2008). Other late career roles included a turn in the gothic thriller "Knife Edge" (2009), and an appearance alongside Chevy Chase in the holiday family comedy "Goose on the Loose" (2011). By Bryce Coleman

The Internet could be a greater force for good if Man's intrinsic rottenness would only let it be theft and virus free. And even more for so for advances in Physics and Chemistry. Einstein, with great scientific imagination, added a constant of integration to make his Relativity Theory match observation. The historical result of his mathematical aesthetic has tuned out to be much less copacetic. A half century later it would lead to despair because, as we all know, E really does equal MC square. The Bible is at least partly right about Knowledge and Sin, even if to remain ignorant is not exactly commanded within. Gestures that insult, beg and swear offer a window into Roman culture. By Emiland Guillerme and Rachel Donadio on Publish DateJune 30, 2013. by Gianni Cipriano for The New York Times.Watch in Times Video » Embed ShareTweet ROME — In the great open-air theater that is Rome, the characters talk with their hands as much as their mouths. While talking animatedly on their cellphones or smoking cigarettes or even while downshifting their tiny cars through rush-hour traffic, they gesticulate with enviably elegant coordination. From the classic fingers pinched against the thumb that can mean “Whaddya want from me?” or “I wasn’t born yesterday” to a hand circled slowly, indicating “Whatever” or “That’ll be the day,” there is an eloquence to the Italian hand gesture. In a culture that prizes oratory, nothing deflates airy rhetoric more swiftly. Some gestures are simple: the side of the hand against the belly means hungry; the index finger twisted into the cheek means something tastes good; and tapping one’s wrist is a universal sign for “hurry up.” But others are far more complex. They add an inflection — of fatalism, resignation, world-weariness — that is as much a part of the Italian experience as breathing. Two open hands can ask a real question, “What’s happening?” But hands placed in prayer become a sort of supplication, a rhetorical question: “What do you expect me to do about it?” Ask when a Roman bus might arrive, and the universal answer is shrugged shoulders, an “ehh” that sounds like an engine turning over and two raised hands that say, “Only when Providence allows.” To Italians, gesturing comes naturally. “You mean Americans don’t gesture? They talk like this?” asked Pasquale Guarrancino, a Roman taxi driver, freezing up and placing his arms flat against his sides. He had been sitting in his cab talking with a friend outside, each moving his hands in elaborate choreography. Asked to describe his favorite gesture, he said it was not fit for print. In Italy, children and adolescents gesture. The elderly gesture. Some Italians joke that gesturing may even begin before birth. “In the ultrasound, I think the baby is saying, ‘Doctor, what do you want from me?’ ” said Laura Offeddu, a Roman and an elaborate gesticulator, as she pinched her fingers together and moved her hand up and down. Photo The politician Nicola Cosentino at a news conference in January. CreditGianni Cipriano for The New York Times On a recent afternoon, two middle-aged men in elegant dark suits were deep in conversation outside the Giolitti ice cream parlor in downtown Rome, gesturing even as they held gelato in cones. One, who gave his name only as Alessandro, noted that younger people used a gesture that his generation did not: quotation marks to signify irony. Sometimes gesturing can get out of hand. Last year, Italy’s highest court ruled that a man who inadvertently struck an 80-year-old woman while gesticulating in a piazza in the southern region Puglia was liable for civil damages. “The public street isn’t a living room,” the judges ruled, saying, “The habit of accompanying a conversation with gestures, while certainly licit, becomes illicit” in some contexts. In 2008, Umberto Bossi, the colorful founder of the conservative Northern League, raised his middle finger during the singing of Italy’s national anthem. But prosecutors in Venice determined that the gesture, while obscene and the cause of widespread outrage, was not a crime. Gestures have long been a part of Italy’s political spectacle. Former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is a noted gesticulator. When he greeted President Obama and his wife, Michelle, at a meeting of the Group of 20 leaders in September 2009, he extended both hands, palms facing toward himself, and then pinched his fingers as he looked Mrs. Obama up and down — a gesture that might be interpreted as “va-va-voom.” In contrast, Giulio Andreotti — Christian Democrat, seven-time prime minister and by far the most powerful politician of the Italian postwar era — was famous for keeping both hands clasped in front of him. The subtle, patient gesture functioned as a kind of deterrent, indicating the tremendous power he could deploy if he chose to. Isabella Poggi, a professor of psychology at Roma Tre University and an expert on gestures, has identified around 250 gestures that Italians use in everyday conversation. “There are gestures expressing a threat or a wish or desperation or shame or pride,” she said. The only thing differentiating them from sign language is that they are used individually and lack a full syntax, Ms. Poggi added. Photo Nichi Vendola, a politician, punctuated an answer with a hand gesture.CreditGianni Cipriano for The New York Times Far more than quaint folklore, gestures have a rich history. One theory holds that Italians developed them as an alternative form of communication during the centuries when they lived under foreign occupation — by Austria, France and Spain in the 14th through 19th centuries — as a way of communicating without their overlords understanding. Another theory, advanced by Adam Kendon, the editor in chief of the journal Gesture, is that in overpopulated cities like Naples, gesturing became a way of competing, of marking one’s territory in a crowded arena. “To get attention, people gestured and used their whole bodies,” Ms. Poggi said, explaining the theory. Andrea De Jorio, a 19th-century priest and archaeologist, discovered comparisons between the gestures used by the figures painted on ancient Greek vases found in the Naples area and the gestures used by his Neapolitan contemporaries. Over the centuries, languages have evolved, but gestures remain. “Gestures change less than words,” Ms. Poggi said. Philosophers have long been preoccupied by gesture. In “The New Science,” the 18th-century Italian philosopher Giambattista Vico, who once taught rhetoric at the University of Naples, argued that gesture might have been the earliest form of language. By some accounts, the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein overhauled — or at least refined — his theory that language was used to establish truth, to inform, after the Italian economist Piero Sraffa responded to his theory with a single gesture: fingers brushing the chin, indicating “I don’t give a damn,” the classic antiauthority brushoff. Such a gesture does not convey information; it negates it. “It’s a rebellion against power,” Ms. Poggi said, “a way of reacquiring one’s own dignity.” One Italian village may hold the secret to a long life American and Italian scientists claim this week to have found a region in Italy where a remarkable proportion of the population is living into extreme old age. There is no doubting the natural beauty of Acciaroli on Italy’s southern coast, but this place is raising a number of questions: Why are the people here living well above Italy’s national average? And why does it have one of the world’s highest concentrations of centenarians, people over 100 years old? CBS News correspondent Seth Doane met some of the so-called “super-agers” in Acciaroli, who are living longer and healthier than ever before, like 88-year old Alfredo Vassallo who tends the town garden daily, or the rather spry 94-year-old Amina Fedullo. In Ogliastra, roughly one in every 2,000 people lives to celebrate their 100th birthday. In Ogliastra, roughly one in every 2,000 people lives to celebrate their 100th birthday. This is about five times the rate in most developed countries, such as the UK and USA. To understand why this is the case, the company has bought more than 230,000 biological samples - such as frozen blood - from 12,600 residents. The samples have also been matched with medical reports, and official records such as death certificates dating back more than 400 years. Mr Gabriele Cerrone, Tiziana's chairman and founder told the Financial Times that he hoped the data will provide information on how a long life expectancy is linked to both genetics and the environment. Mr Cerrone said: 'Sardinia is renowned as one of only three regions in the world with an exceptionally high proportion of centenarians. 'The opportunity is to generate valuable insights into gene regulatory networks, genotype-phenotype linkage and gene-environment interactions that will feed into and inform our drug discovery and diagnostic programmes.'

Some Asians may say it's "rice-like" and others that it's "lice-rike" but no matter how it rolls off the tongue and whether one is old or young there appears to be an urgency great to eat daily complex carbohydrate like French fries, rice, pasta or well-made bread though it may be a wiser bet-- not to follow Marie Antoinette-- and recommend cake instead since it caused her to lose both Crown and head. MODERN POLITICAL ENTERTAINMENT

POLITICAL ENTERTAINMENT IN THE MODERN HOME Political entertainment in the modern home may not be considered a suitable topic for a poem but rather serves to provoke a debate about the future of such domestic real estate. When a TV set reaches more than 72 inches and has to raised and lowered by winches its images then become mightily impressive but any lack of substance only gets depressive. if the first thing one sees on opening one's door is Donald Trump's hugely bouffant pompadour and the deepening bags under Hillary's eyes sometimes surprise-- in fact, you and your companion might mistake them for the Grand Canyon- it may be time to set back the clocks and return to the old radio box, if only once again we could hear something more patrician like FDR's voice , instead of what's heard in today's edition.
