The Hidden Dangers of Baby Powder

The Hidden Dangers of Baby Powder

Who knew

that the talc so often applied to a babies' rump

could cause more trouble than a Donald Trump

and be even more prodigious

at arousing the litigious?

Did Johnson & Johnson Hide the Dangers of Baby Powder for Decades?

More than 1,000 women are suing the company for covering up a cancer risk.
Jacqueline Fox worked in restaurant kitchens and school cafeterias, cleaned people’s houses, watched their kids, raised a son, and took in two foster children. She was careful about her appearance and liked to tend the garden in front of her home in Birmingham, Alabama. She had been treated for high blood pressure, arthritis, and diabetes, but, at 59, she was feeling pretty good. In the spring of 2013, her poodle, Dexter, began acting strangely. He’d jump on her, he’d cry, he’d stay close by all day. Fox happened to watch a television program about a dog that sensed its owner was unwell. When she let Dexter sniff her, he whined even more.
A week later, Fox was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer. She had chemotherapy to shrink the tumors and surgery to remove her uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and part of her spleen and colon. In December of that year, she saw a commercial from an Alabama law firm, Beasley Allen, suggesting a connection between long-term use of Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder and ovarian cancer. Fox had been sprinkling Baby Powder made from talc on her underwear every day since she was a teen. “I was raised up on it,” she later said in a deposition. “They was to help you stay fresh and clean. … We ladies have to take care of ourselves.” It was as normal as using toothpaste or deodorant. “We both were a bit skeptical at first,” says her son, Marvin Salter, a mortgage banker in Jacksonville, Fla. “It has to be safe. It’s put on babies. It’s been around forever. Why haven’t we heard about any ill effects?”

NOSTALGIA

Nostalgia

is a luxury for some

of whom  I've never been one.

For  whatever reason

I've always found it  out of season

and so  have  little sympathy

to live in   this form of retrospective Utopia,

one so often based on   amnesiac myopia.

For me  Life is and always has been here and now---

a pleasure mixed with  pain--

If, at times,   happily , I close my  eyes,  then --Pow--

something's coming at me again!

Baseball's Latest Recruit

Baseball’s Latest Recruit Is an iPad

Deal between Apple, Major League Baseball makes tablets, strategy apps available to coaches

There will be a new player in Major League Baseball dugouts this season: the iPad. AppleInc. and MLB signed a multi-year agreement to equip every team with iPad Pro tablets to help coaching staffs make better use of data.
Teams will be able sift through performance stats from current and past seasons, weigh potential pitcher-hitter matchups, look at “spray charts” showing where a player is likely to hit a ball, even cue up videos of plays from previous games.

Baseball's newest recruit

isn't wearing a suit

with bold colors or stripes

and never curses or gripes.

Though such  demeanor may sound  boring

 results could  prove worth adoring

since Statistics will be  the new name

of what was -- once -- "America's Game"

and  they will now  be  on tap from a handsome   Apple I Pad

carefully protected from any random dirt or  tobacco wad.
However, it remains to be seen whether generations X,Y and Z

will like this or prefer staying  cozily  home with Virtual Reality.

RE: Juvenation?

RE: Juvenation?

It would not come as  a great surprise

if Science will some day  old age defeat

making us all  able once again to rise

and march deftly to a different beat.

Then if rejuvenation's still  your wish ,

just put a stem cell or two  in a dish,

 add an appropriate brew,

and --voila-- another You?

Yet even if that formula's someday true

the result would  still  need  many  years

exposed to life's manifold  troubles and tears

before this new You's  dry behind the ears.

And, now, having  once  been  lucky enough

or, perhaps, just naturally tough

to have so long survived this World's vice---

would you really   want to do so twice?

Biologically defeated
Mentally mildly heated.
Overall feeling cheated.

It’s spring, tra la.
In spring, this old man’s eyes fill with lust
As winter’s garbs are discarded with gust.
Limbs thin, propel bodies supple
With tight clothing, offset with ruffle.
Strolling the street is a constant delight
Watching young figures with faces bright
As they exult in the power of their body.
My lust is a bust; my hots from a toddy.

A rush to judgment at Broward Health - Sun Sentinel

A rush to judgment at Broward Health - Sun Sentinel

Something very strange is going on at Broward Health
amid charges of kickbacks and contracts made in stealth.
Though the facts may not be arranged as neatly as one might desire,
it is generally true, that with so much smoke there certainly must be fire.
Who and what will quench
the rapidly rising stench?

Birdie Sanders and Presidential Pets

"Birdie" Sanders & Presidential Pets

There should be  a small poem, perhaps even an ode

dedicated to a little bird that would leave its abode

then land on both feet

to give a political tweet.

When it receives  applause that is  loud

from the  gathered  crowd,

is it because, though  able to fly,

they know it won't lie?

And doesn't many a Presidential Pet, whether ugly or cute,

deserve also such   homage for being similarly astute?

A BIRD ON THE STAND IS WORTH TWO...

Small Bird Lands on Bernie Sanders’ Lectern Mid-Speech, Brings Crowd to Their Feet

The small critter now dubbed ‘Birdie Sanders’ electrified the attendees at Sanders’ Portland rally.
Birds land on all sorts of things, all the time. They congregate on phone wires to creepily stare at you as you get the mail and reflect on why your parents thought Hitchcock would be okay for a nine-year-old. They often land on beachgoers’ hot dogs, usually as the first step of a two-step hot dog theft. Once, a pigeon landed on a hat that my mother was wearing at the time. All of this is to say that for a bird landing on a thing to qualify as newsworthy, the bird or the thing it lands on better be pretty out of the ordinary. As far as major outlets can tell at present, there’s not much special about the small bird making headlines this morning, but its choice to land on the lectern that Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders was then using for a speech at a Portland rally on Friday night has sent seismic shockwaves through the Internet.
The footage, embedded above, is really quite something: as Sanders speaks to the assembled crowd, a handful of first-responders take note of the avian interloper and attempt to notify the major political player that he’s in the vicinity of a small bird. The murmurs register with Sanders, but it takes him a moment to locate the source of the disturbance. He takes the whole thing with good humor, smiling and preparing to weave the unanticipated presence into his speech (ultimately comparing the surprise guest with the symbolic dove of peace, calling for an end to global wars), before the small bird hops onto his lectern and the audience explodes into wild applause. The Sanders campaign wasted no time capitalizing on the apparent popularity of the small bird, dubbing him “Birdie Sanders” and embracing him as part of the Sanders team.
