The New Psychiatry:
Although it's Xmas,
Dr. Watson can see you now.
All over the world, scientists,
almost as if spontaneously,
race to learn more about the Brain
Washington Post, Christmas Day, 2015
while , more or less simultaneously
our world goes down the drain.
That Man's brain is truly a marvelous organ
is something that doesn't need a vote
but to try to list all its intricate tricks,
would take too long to quote.
Yet, from the North Pole to the Equator
and as far as the Hubble Telescope can see
no Cosmic University has ever granted its creator
a well-earned PhD.
Today, as Christmas Carols fill the air
there may be more reasons to despair
than hope.
But I still like the grateful noise,
the Xmas Trees and other toys---
does that make me a dope?

At Harvard Medical School, I have had the good fortune to be involved in the development of cross-cutting programs examining issues related to brain-mind disorders, spirituality and ethics. Medical students gravitate towards such topics. At Brigham and Women’s Hospital, I have driven the development of the Center for Brain Mind Medicine, which brings together neuropsychiatrists, cognitive behavioral neurologists and neuropsychologists. Just as crucial, the Center brings together trainees in all of those fields in order to interact and learn in that mixed setting. Everyone benefits — most importantly the patients and their families.
David Silbersweig said today's multidisciplinary world needs liberal arts -- and philosophy in particular -- more than ever.
