Frank Sinatra at 100 and American Pharaoh loses

The Graveyard of Champions claimed another favorite on Saturday afternoon at Saratoga Race Course, when Keen Ice ran down American Pharoah in the lane to deny him victory in the Travers Stakes.
In defeat, American Pharoah joins Gallant Fox, Secretariat and Affirmed as Triple Crown winners that came to Saratoga and lost, along with a host of other champions and favorites to be bested by the track in Saratoga Springs.

I type this by the light of a far off lamp

while, thanks to remnants of Eri ka,

everything outside is quiet and damp,

and I realize It's lucky for all concerned

that Frank Sinatra was a great  crooner

and not some other kind of  champ

who might have had to retire sooner.

After  much stress and wear.

though  muscular hooves  are stronger

it certainly is abundantly clear

that human vocal cords can  last much longer.

Still, it may not be too bad

or make one feel that sad

after such early prosperity,

for American Pharoah  to be retired at three.

They'll give him carrots and many another  treat

while he's at stud

and he'll always have clean feet

and never  have to run in the mud.

And though he may have to see a lots of vets

to insure that  owners "cover"their bets

there's no need to shed a tear,

for  a Prize stallion like American Pharoah,

No, No , Noah!

For them, even  "4" can be a VERY good year.

Sea the Stars, which is owned by the wealthy Hong Kong-based Tsui family, will stand at the Aga Khan's Gilltown stud farm in County Kildare in Ireland. He will cover (the polite term for equine intercourse) at least 100 mares a year; the owner of each mare is likely to pay around £75,000 for the privilege; he thus stands to make at least £7.5m a year. He could cover 400 mares if the owners wanted to work him really hard. Many stallions winter in the southern hemisphere, especially Australia, to service mares down under. A well-regarded stallion, whose progeny do well at the track, is a money-making machine. He might go on producing the goods for 20 years. His earnings will dwarf anything he could make on the racecourse. No wonder the statue on the edge of Newmarket is of a stallion rather than a racehorse. The stud farms are playing for the highest stakes of all.
