Philosophers

Philosophers

Almost all great philosophers have been men

of great intelligence, yet their  lives have rarely been long and happy.

Despite their smarts, they often failed in life  and might like to live  again

But unfortunately, that cannot be their destiny.

Brilliance of thought,

in actual practice

often comes to nought

And it's also  difficult to predict

 History's ultimate verdict:

What once was  said elegantly

over vin ordinaire

may later seem decadently

only vibrating air.

So in contemplating Life's buffet

perhaps this should be  The Way:

choose and pick

from each dialectic.

Now and then spend an hour

with Schopenhauer

or occasionally see

what Friedrich Nietzsche

can offer thee

or else listen to a mind-numbing rant

from Emmanuel Kant

not to mention lots  of other clever slobs--

perhaps including Thomas Hobbes.

But I suspect in the end you may agree with Omar

in his ancient report

that Life is far  too short

to mar it with such sport,

as, he said:

"Myself when young did eagerly frequent

Doctor and Saint and heard great argument"

(by which they did me implore?)

yet "evermore, came out by the same door

that in I went."
