The New Exodus
After many generations on New York's Lower East Side
Streits is moving west
For them baking Matzo's has long been a pride
and Streits' is still among the best.
They won't take along their two 75 feet long ovens
because, unlike some ever-youthful sonata of Beethoven's--
they're now too old, creaky and slow--
and it's one main reason they had to go.
Others include parking and gentrification--
New Yorks' L.E.S. is a now "hot" real estate location.
I suppose they might have chosen Bronx's Fort Apache
but instead, they've decided it's to be New Jersey's Moonachie.
And while G-d these days may or may not still have the powers
to split the Hudson or cause a plague of either locust or midge
these new exiles should still be able to leave New York's towers
simply by using The George Washington Bridge.
providing that New Jersey's recently slimmed but still governing Pharaoh
won't tie up the traffic too much so that they couldn't go.
And when they finally do, they will be close to the New York Giants football team
who, though they may be be Philistines, rarely seem to have a capable Goliath
since it usually takes no sling shot to disrupt their annual title dream---
simply throw them a football and they dieth.
Finally, let's hope it won't take forty years for the Streits to arrive
and, that sooner or later, Streit's family factory again will thrive
because I'm tired of seeing everything, even latkes and lox,
with "Made in China" printed on the box.
