AGING
Though It's hardly any news that I'm confessing,
Aging is a very mixed blessing.
More than a few decades in the memory bank
should help guard emotions like a tank
yet, we're never quite ready for senescence
no matter our age, we're partly adolescents,
and somehow an urge to combine
is always there like a land mine.
Some have said the 'aging apocalypse'
threatens civilization with eclipse,
yet no matter how many years fly by
very few of us are in any rush to die.

To the Editor:
I, like Anne Karpf, would “run screaming the other way” if “offered the chance to return to my 14-year-old self.” However, what would she do if offered the chance to return to her 29- or 39- or 49-year-old self? I’m 68. I’d jump at the chance. If I could jump.

Correction: January 13, 2015
A letter from Baltimore on Monday about aging omitted five words from a sentence by Anne Karpf, the writer of the Sunday Review article that the letter responded to. The sentence, with the omitted words in italics, should have read, “The language used to describe the changing age composition of the population is little short of apocalyptic.”
I'M GLAD I'M NOT YOUNG ANYMORE From "Gigi" (1958) (Lyrics : Alan Jay Lerner / Music : Frederick Loewe) Poor boy! Poor boy! Down-hearted and depressed and in a spin Poor boy! Poor boy! Oh, youth can really do a fellow in! How lovely to sit here in the shade With none of the woes of man and maid I'm glad I'm not young anymore The rivals that don't exist at all The feeling you're only two feet tall I'm glad that I'm not young anymore No more confusion No morning-after surprise No self-delusion That when you're telling those lies She isn't wise And even if love comes through the door The chance that goes on forevermore Forevermore is shorter than before Oh, I'm so glad that I'm not young anymore The tiny remark that tortures you The fear that your friends won't like her too I'm glad I'm not young anymore The longing to end the stale affair Until you find out she doesn't care I'm glad that I'm not young anymore No more frustration No star-crossed lover am I No aggravation Just one reluctant reply "Lady, goodbye!" The Fountain of Youth is dull as paint Methuselah is my patron saint I've never been so comfortable before Oh, I'm so glad that I'm not young anymore

VERSE You don't know that I felt good when we up and parted. You don't know I knocked on wood gladly broken-hearted. Worrying is trought, I sleep all night appetite and health restored. You don't know how muck I'm bored! REFRAIN 1 The sleepless nights, the daily fights the qick toboggan when you reach the heights I miss the kisses and I miss the bites I wish I were in love again! The broken dates, the endless waits, the lovely loving and the hateful hates, the conversations with the flying plates I wish I were in love again! No more pain no more strain now I'm sane but ... I would rather be gaga! The pulled-out fur of cat and cur the fine mismating of a him and her I've learned my lesson, but I wish I were in love again! REFRAIN 2 The furtive sight the blackened eye, the words "I'll love you till the day I day" the self-deception the belives the lie I wish I were in love again! When love congeals it soon reveals the faint aroma of performing seals the double-crossong ps a pair of heels. I wish I were in love again! No more care no despair I'm all there now But I'd rather be punch-drunk!
Belive me sir I much prefer the classic battle of a him and her. I don't like quiet and I wish I were in love again!
