ADLAI STEVENSON QUOTE, et al, and State of the Union?

Although I wasn't able to solve the Quote-Acrostic in last Sunday's Sun Sentinel, I enjoyed
reading the correct solution:

BRET STEPHENS: DE GUSTIBUS:

Following being told he had the support of every thinking person in America in his second presidential bid, Democratic candidate Adlai Stevenson famously replied,

That's not enough, Madam. We need a majority."

Here are a few more political witticisms:

"Politics, noun. A strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. The conduct of public affairs for private advantage." —Ambrose Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary

"Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedies." —Groucho Marx
