US Open 2015: Jordan wins, as Dustin 'Chokes'

This was a remarkable event

given to us to watch as a weekend present,

one filled with tension

with many an added dimension

and even a moral subtext

as we watched to see what would happen next.

The leader Dustin Johnson 'choked' or faltered

on the very last hole

so his earnings were considerably altered--

by about a million less we're told.

Still, he "will take home $877,144 as a consolation prize",

which isn't too bad for four days of healthy exercise.

And, much to his prospective father-in-law's relief,

that's still rather a fairly substantial "new leaf"

The $1.8 million first-place prize is worth nearly $200,000 more than what Martin Kaymer won last year when he ran away from the field at Pinehurst No. 2. He won $1.62 million in what was a $9 million purse. This year, however, the USGA upped the overall purse -- and the winning share -- to match other major championships. The Players Championship and PGA Championship handed out $10 million purses last season, while the Masters increased it's purse to $10 million this season.

It wasn't just Spieth walking away with a sizable payday. Thanks to ties, the top 24 players all earned a six-figure payout. The purse was structured so the top four finishers would all earn at least $475,000 while the top nine would each earn a quarter of a million dollars. That ultimately got skewed a bit with several players splitting the purse money for multiple spots due to ties. Johnson missed a chance to force a playoff by an inch, but will take home $877,144 as a consolation prize for tying for second.
