The Future of Marriage?

The future of marriage?

Now that IBM's Watson has conquered both Chess and Jeopardy,

becoming the current reigning champion of both,

when will it  take on all the myriad problems of matrimony

and attempt to improve a partner's inattention or  sloth?

For  now that everyone wears a computerized gadget

there is no longer need for a spouse to wield a hatchet.

when one can employ the voice of  a wise lady like Siri

to help avert  impending marital  misery .

I expect that soon  at the top of every couple's wishes,

or if not,  then at some  early anniversary,

will be a domestic  robot that cooks, cleans and does   laundry and dishes....

....instead of a potentially  complaining adversary.

Yet , after all butlers and maids are eliminated by progress,

what will they  use for interminable family epics on PBS?

ADVICE TO AUTHORS from Michael Lewis

ADVICE TO AUTHORS from  Michael Lewis

Never mind  the pain and the stress

should  a movie make your book a mess.

And not to  worry if the outcome's s mostly dreck

which of  your talent has used hardly  an ounce;

Just gratefully accept the check

and hope it will not later bounce.

Ryan Gosling plays the truth-telling but unreliable narrator in Adam McKay’s film adaptation of Michael Lewis’s The Big Short. ... Who would—or could—make a movie about credit-default swaps? ... One was the sheer complexity of modern finance: how to explain credit-default swaps and ...

MY  role in making the movies of my books—the role of the author—has been essentially that of a spectator. I think it is fair to say that the people who make movies from books would just as soon that the books’ authors be dead. I don’t take this personally. When it comes time to turn his book into a movie the author has little of value to add and has the power to become a serious nuisance. At a public screening of the first (silent) movie made from The Great Gatsbythe Fitzgeralds walked out. During the making of Patriot Games, Tom Clancy declared war on Paramount. There’s a long list of authors who have bitched and moaned about what the movie people have done to their precious works of art. In my view authors who sell the movie rights to their books should just cash the check and shut up.

On the screenwriter:

In his previous life as head writer at Saturday Night Live, McKay says, he used to think up 20 skits on the assumption that 18 wouldn’t work—but that 2 would. He says he did the same sort of thing as a stand-up comedian, writing dozens of jokes for every one he performed. He never worried too much about his less than great ideas, because he knew he’d be defined only by the great ones, and he never became too attached to any one idea, because he knew he could always find others. He was generous with his own mind, in the way that newly rich people are often openhanded with money, as they know they can always get more. This character trait is essential to The Big Short. There are many effective storytelling tricks in the movie that a filmmaker would never try if he worried about people wondering if he knew what he was doing. McKay’s original script opened with Morgan Freeman filming a commercial for a big Wall Street bank and going on about trust and security, then stopping, turning to the audience, and saying, “Actually, that’s all fucking bullshit.”

Four-legged therapists:

If you’re stressed about flying, these four-legged therapists can help

“Traveling during the holiday time is stressful,” said Jack Hillelsohn, director of volunteer activities for PAL and dad of pony-size Rugi. “How can you not feel better when you have a dog coming over to say hello?”
At Dulles, the dogs “work” two shifts, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Event participants called out to passengers like circus barkers.
“Feeling stressed?” asked John Sapienza. “She’s guaranteed to de-stress.” Patsy lay on her back at his feet, her belly available for rubbing.

From left, John Sapienza, Jack Hillelsohn, Amanda Mielkie and Chuck Mielkie ride on a mobile lounge with their comfort dogs Patsy, left, Rugi, center, and Callie. (Matt McClain/The Washington Post)
The animals and their owners set out from the United Club, which provided a lounge for the dogs. Diva demands: bottled water and bowls. The group strolled through Concourse C, drawing stares that quickly turned to smiles.
“You are welcome to pet her,” Jane Zimmerman said to a man walking by. “She loves attention.”
The man took her advice, and Zimmerman shared Pepper’s rescue story with him. Of all the strange coincidences: The traveler and the dog hailed from the same city in South Carolina.
Nearby, A.J. and Sarah Jane Murphy, from Santa Cruz. Calif., were snapping photos of Rugi as if he were a celebrity pet. The siblings had been pacing the hallways during their long layover.
Rugi was “a nice diversion,” Sarah Jane said.
Kim Denning, wearing the familiar dark-blue United uniform, was making the rounds around the ad-hoc yard. “It is so hard to put into words how they make you feel,” said the service director . “It makes me feel happy.”
On the sidelines, an older woman quietly watched. She approached Cinnamon but then pulled back. “I just lost my standard poodle,” she said softly.
The petting really picked up in the open space outside the mobile lounge. It was a high-traffic location, with folks getting off the people-movers, checking their flights on the overhead board, grabbing a coffee at Starbucks or discovering their fate at the customer service outpost.

Four-legged therapists:

In  overly  crowded and hectic  times,
the world  needs   love, love, love.
So   thoughtful people at United Airlines
provide it on the ground, if not above:

A warm heart and faithful tongue
can comfort both old and young,
and here is  the proof:
It goes woof ,woof, woof.

Sapienza positioned Pasty near the line, knowing that the blood-pressure readings there were probably running high.
“Hey, is anybody stressed?” he called out. Two women responded. One grew teary-eyed, explaining that she had recently lost her dog. The other, Catherine Minto, said that she missed her golden retriever in San Francisco. After receiving her new ticket to Rhode Island, Minto sought out Patsy and spread out on the floor beside her new friend.
“I feel much better now that I’m covered in dog hair,” she said.

Alternate (Miss) Universes

Alternate (Miss) Universes

We live in a mysterious Cosmos.

Though  hard to understand for most of us,

there may be a few physicists

able to get at its  gists and twists

and  obscure things like dark matter .

Perhaps we   may find among the latter

the  ebullient Mr. Donald Trump,

whose expertise  on Frump vs. anti- Frump

enables him to make  a tidy profit

no matter what others   make of it.

However, judging from the tumultuous scenes

neither Ms. Colombia or Miss Philippines

at that  Contest felt she was in Heaven ,

whether it has  four dimensions or eleven.

Donald Trump scores with Miss Universe disaster

It was the moment that could have broken Donald Trump’s presidential ambitions: In June, he likened immigrants to rapists, prompting Univision to ditch his beauty pageants and NBC to cut ties with him.
At Univision we see first-hand the work ethic, love for family, strong religious values and the important role Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans have had and will continue to have in building the future of our country,” the company said in a statement posted on its website. “We will not be airing the Miss USA pageant on July 12th or working on any other projects tied to the Trump Organization.”
Trump, of course, survived what at first seemed like a campaign-ending gaffe — and has gone on to survive many more. “Mexican gov doesn’t want me talking about terrible border situation & horrible trade deals,” he said in a defiant tweet. “Forcing Univision to get me to stop — no way!”

But rhetoric is one thing. Could Trump successful spin the loss of a business deal valued at up to $25 million into political and financial victory in a campaign that, at the time, seemed merely whimsical?
It appears so. With the disastrous Miss Universe 2015 that just unfolded in Las Vegas, Trump won without even being onstage. Even a beauty pageant, it seemed, just couldn’t run smoothly without him around.
Hours before Miss Universe, Trump was cheering it on from the sidelines. After being banished by Univision and exiled from NBC over his anti-immigrant comments, Trump bought the rights to the pageant back from NBC — then flipped it in September to the entertainment company WME-IMG in a matter of days.
“My friend, @AriEmanuel of @IMG, bought the Miss Universe pageants from me and they are on tonight on #Fox!” he wrote. “Tune in!”

Physicists Will Test Existence of Alternate Universes

Scientist running the world's biggest physics experiment — the Large Hadron Collider located in Geneva, Switzerland — will soon begin trials that will test for the presence of alternate universes existing in different dimensions of hyperspace.
Since detecting the Higgs boson, the so-called God particle, which explains how matter originally obtained mass, the collider has been shut down for two years while undergoing renovations. When it reopens, it will be able to reach energy levels higher than ever before: 13 tera electron volts (TeV). The Higgs boson was discovered at levels of 5.3 TeV.
At these high levels of energy, physicists will be able to determine if alternate universes exist in different dimensions of hyperspace, the strange area into which our universe is expanding. There are upwards of 10 dimensions in hyperspace and scientists think that our universe may be one among many. As Michio Kaku explains in a Big Think interview:
"Our universe is nothing but one bubble, but there are other bubbles. When two bubbles collide that could merge into a bigger bubble, which could be the big bang. In fact, that is what probably the big bang is or perhaps a bubble fissioned in half and split off into two bubbles. That could be the big bang. Or perhaps the universe popped into existence out of nothing. That is also a possibility."
The existence of alternate universe could explain the current incongruities that exist at our most fundamental understanding of the universe, or our universe, at least. Physicists are at a loss to explain the source of dark energy, which is propelling galaxies farther away from each other at an increasing velocity. But scientists theorize that dark energy may be spilling into our universe from parallel universes.

Steve Harvey crowns wrong Miss Universe

 December 20 at 11:00 PM
For a moment, all was right with the universe for Miss Colombia. Indeed, Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo had just been crowned Miss Universe on national television in Las Vegas by co-host Steve Harvey — the pinnacle of any pageant contestant’s career.
Then, quickly and devastatingly, her dream died. It turned out Harvey had read the wrong name.
“Okay, folks,” said Harvey, clad in a white tuxedo with a red-and-white polka dot bow tie as Miss Colombia waved to a cheering crowd, said. “I have to apologize.”
The crowd erupted again — perhaps expecting one of Harvey’s patented slow-burn bits. But this was no joke.
“The first runner-up is Colombia,” Harvey said.
Miss Colombia looked ready to kill — as it suddenly dawned on Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, that she, the former first runner-up, had actually won the night. The incredibly awkward outcome: Miss Colombia was uncrowned, and Miss Philippines crowned.

“I will take responsibility for this,” Harvey said. “It was my mistake. It was on the card. Horrible mistake, but the right thing — I can show it to you right here. The first word is ‘Colombia.’ It is my mistake.”
Harvey — like any comedian flopping – made the best of a bad situation. Or tried to.
“Still a great night,” he said — though Miss Colombia might not have concurred. “Please don’t hold it against the ladies. Please don’t. We feel so badly. But it’s still a great night.”
A few minutes later, Harvey apologized again via social media.
“I want to apologize emphatically to Miss Philippians and Miss Columbia,” Harvey tweeted in a typo-ridden message later deleted. “This was a terribly honest human mistake and I am so regretful.”
