Driving North in Palm Beach: City and County

The  name may once have brought  thoughts of romantic seduction,

but Palm Beach, both the City and County, are  now in re- construction.

So, going up Route One

from Boca north isn't as much fun,

though the ordeal 

may still have appeal. 

You  trade boredom on Route 95

for a  slow, more interesting drive,

though not with  a better chance

 of remaining alive,

Passing run down neighborhoods with darker skinned inhabitants

and   Bodegas and Eglises,

  the real surprises 

don't come

until  West Palm ,

where streets curve and  veer towards  the East

and so many construction dead-ends  are found 

that you haven't the least idea 

of where you're supposed to be bound

and  whether to continue to steer North

or else, turn around.

Because in their rush to sell you,

developers  have  neglected signs that might tell you

just where is Route One. ...

Is it Olive Avenue-- that?  and/or  Broadway too?

And what about those   bridges  closed?

There's  another puzzle  posed---

and not knowing  what, or what  not, to do,

 you persevere, until ,   you  see,

and are, suddenly, 

at 25 miles per hour, in lanes

as straight and narrow as weather vanes,

bordered by mansions hidden by magnificent tall sculptured hedges

with  tens of toiling workers  who are pledges

to the   continued prosperity

as well as inequality

in America. 

And , all the while 

behind a grudging smile, 

inquisitive local police

watch  your fifteen year old Buick Regal

 considering it and  you  both  too old to be  illegal,

yet also  unlikely to add to real estate values already  high,

so,they gladly help you    if you'll     just please pass by. 

And once you finally  do escape the maze,

 you head further north toward the comfortable J's

of   Juno and Jupiter in   open sun

relieved that you haven't struck  anyone.
